Restricting Quizzes to Specific Users or Special Access for Students

Home » Assessments » Quizzes » Restricting Quizzes to Specific Users or Special Access for Students

There are times when a student(s) may need additional time to write a quiz, or needs to write outside the regular quiz times. There may also be times when you want to release the same quiz to different groups or sections in your course.

Note: Once you’ve created special access for a student(s), they no longer can access the quiz during the regular quiz times.

Adding Special Access to Your Quizzes for Individual Students

  1. From the drop-down menu beside the quiz name, click Edit
  2. Click to expand Availability Dates & Conditions

Note: The dates and restrictions on this page reflect the general properties of the quiz, applied to the whole classlist.

  1. Click Manage Special Access
  2. Leaving the default “Allow selected users special access to this quiz” selected, click on the Add Users to Special Access button
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page, select the student(s) you wish to give special access to, and click Add Special Access
  4. Scroll to the top of the page, and make the appropriate changes to the quiz properties that reflect your special access conditions. Any properties you don’t change will have the original settings (the ones created for the whole class) applied, E.g., Due Date, Availability, Timing, Attempts). For example, if you want the student to have a different Start and End Date (the times/dates between which students are able to start the quiz), or a different time limit (the amount of time the student has to complete the quiz once they begin), change only those properties.
    • Under Due Date and Availability, check the boxes next to the appropriate properties and change the dates/times to change them from what was set for the rest of the class
    • Under Timing, check the box next to “Override Time Limit” to change the time limit, and check “Override behaviour when time limit is exceeded” to change the quiz behaviour when the student runs out of time, if different from the rest of the class (E.g. automatically submit vs flag as late)
    • Under Attempts, check the “Override attempts allowed” box to grant the student additional attempts
  5. When you have finished, make sure to Save and Close to update your quiz settings

Note: You must repeat these steps if you need to create different access criteria for other students.

Turnitin recently introduced an AI tool designed to assist instructors in detecting AI-generated content in student submissions. This tool potentially analyzes writing styles and may detect anomalies that could possibly indicate the use of generative AI. However, while this technology represents a significant step forward, caution is advised in its application. It’s important to recognize that the tool is not infallible and may not catch every instance of AI-generated content.  Instructors should not rely on the AI tool to detect AI generated content, but rather, use it as one of several strategies in a comprehensive approach to uphold academic standards and encourage genuine student learning and creativity.

Adding Special Access to Your Quizzes for Groups & Sections

  1. Follow steps 1-3 above.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page to select users; from the View By filter dropdown menu, select either Sections or Groups then click the Apply button
  3. From the Sections or Groups filter (depending on your choice above), select your section or group.
  4. Leave the search field blank and click the Search icon to populate the result
  5. You can increase the number of students in the list (if it is a large class) by selecting a higher Per Page option, then select the upper level tick box to select everyone in the list and click on the Add Special Access button
  6. Complete steps 6&7 above

Note: If you have combined one or more sections of your D2L courses and wish to have students in the different sections write the quiz at different times, you can use the Users filters to bring up a list of students in their respective sections. You can also sort by groups, if you have groups in your courses writing at different times.
