The TCDC Course Design Series will help instructors improve their knowledge in three key areas: Backward Design, Assessment, and Active Learning. In three online workshops of 90 minutes, we will explore and use design tools and strategies that make course design faster and more effective, discover ways to make assessment planning easier while improving student learning, and learn to implement participatory strategies to increase student engagement and learning.

Great for new or experienced instructors, you can participate in one, two, or all three workshops although we strongly recommend registering for all three parts.

Let’s Talk about Grading
August 18, 2022

In this interactive workshop, we’ll discuss common grading practices and the challenges they can create for both instructors and students. We’ll explore ways to shift our grading focus from tracking points to encouraging learning and motivation. And after considering how our grading methods might be privileging some students and marginalizing others, we’ll look at ways to evaluate learning in a more equitable way.

Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW)
August 23-25, 2022

The Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) is a 3-day in-person workshop guided by experienced facilitators to help you enhance and improve your teaching. On each day of the ISW, every participant delivers a ‘mini-lesson’ to a small group and receives written and oral feedback from other participants who are learners of the lesson.

In addition to giving you the opportunity to teach more interactive and interesting classes, at the end of the ISW, you will:

  • increase your competence and confidence in the classroom,
  • expand your teaching techniques and strategies,
  • enhance your feedback and evaluative skills, and
  • receive a certificate recognized across North America.

Setting the Class Climate for a Productive Semester
August 31, 2022

As you embark on a new semester, it’s the optimal time to consider what you can do within the first few days to set the stage for a productive semester for both yourself and your students. In this workshop, we’ll look at ways to use the first week of class to begin building a community of learners, clarify expectations (yours and your students’), and consider elements of lesson and activity planning for a smooth and successful semester.
