Let's Talk about Grading

Event Chair: TCDC

DETAILS:

Have you ever stopped to think about your approach to grading? Do you ever struggle deciding what to grade, how to grade and what should be worth what?

In this interactive workshop, we’ll discuss common grading practices and the challenges they can create for both instructors and students. We’ll explore ways to shift our grading focus from tracking points to encouraging learning and motivation. And after considering how our grading methods might be privileging some students and marginalizing others, we’ll look at ways to evaluate learning in a more equitable way.

Workshop Learning Outcomes

After participating in this workshop, you will be able to:

1.  Summarize the history of our current grading system
2. Describe how common grading practices influence students’ approach to learning and levels of motivation
3. Use grading methods that encourage students to focus on learning rather than points/grades
4. Identify grading methods that increase equity in our classes
