A grade scheme enables you to students’ performances on grade items into levels of achievement. A grade scheme can include any number of achievement levels. Each achievement level has its own range of acceptable grades and a symbol, such as a numeric value, letter, or text description, to represent it. 

Types of Grade Schemes

Letter Grade Scheme

If you use Letter Grades for your final grades, you can create your own Letter Grade scheme. In it, you can define letter grades to reflect the grading scale for corresponding percentages.

Creating a new Grade Scheme

  1. In the Schemes tab, click New Scheme.

  2. Complete the scheme details, including:
    • Name (1)
    • Short Name (2)
    • Ranges (3), including:
      • Symbol or text you want to display in Grades when the grade is set. For example, letter grade (A+, A, B+, B and so on), Pass/Fail, or text (Needs work, Proficient, Excels).
      • Start % that defines the starting threshold for the proficiency range.
      • Color that provides a visual cue in Grades to quickly identify grade trends.
      • Assigned Value % defines the numeric grade you want learners to achieve when you evaluate them using this grading scheme.
  3. If you want to add more ranges, enter the number of new ranges and click Add Ranges. (4)

Copy or Delete Scheme

You can copy an existing scheme or delete a scheme.

Note: Organization-level schemes can only be deleted by administrators with the appropriate permissions.

To copy or delete schemes

  1. In the Schemes tab, click More Actions.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Click Copy to copy an existing custom scheme within your course.
    • Click Delete to remove an existing custom scheme within your course.

Applying a Grade Scheme

To set a Grade Scheme as the default for all grade views, go to the Grade Schemes area and click the checkmark to the far right of the scheme you want to enable. If you want to assign a grade scheme to only specific items (E.g., the final grade), you can do that in each grade item’s own Grade Scheme settings in Manage Grades or Enter Grades.

Copying Grade Schemes

Note: Once you have created a Grades Scheme in one course, you can copy it into other courses.

  1. Navigate to the course into which you wish to copy the grades scheme and find the Schemes page.
  2. Select the Copy function from the More Actions  menu.
  3. From the list of your courses, select the course which has the Grades Scheme you’ve already set up and click on the Copy button at the bottom of the page.
  4. If you wish, from the Schemes page, you can set the copied scheme as your new Default Grades scheme, or you can choose this grades scheme for individual items in your gradebook.
