Dates and Restrictions on Assignment Folders

Home » Assessments » Assignments » Dates and Restrictions on Assignment Folders

You can set dates and restrictions on Assignment folder availability, and who can submit to the Assignments folders at any time, either when you first create an Assignments folder, or by editing it after it has been created.

Add a Due Date to an Assignment Folder

The Due Date is the date beyond which submissions will be marked late. It does not prevent submissions.

  1. Go to Assessments > Assignments, and click Edit folder from the dropdown menu of the folder you want to edit
  2. Click into the Due Date box and enter a date
  3. Click Save

Set the availability dates for a folder

The Start and End Dates are the dates between which students can submit. If there is a Start and End Date on a folder, students will not be able to submit before the Start Date, or after the End Date.

  1. Go to Assessments > Assignments, and click Edit folder from the dropdown menu of the folder you want to edit
  2. Click to expand Availability Dates & Conditions on the right hand sidebar
  3. Under Availability Dates & Conditions, set a Start and End Date
  4. Click Save.

Note: Date availability (by setting Has Due Date, Has Start Date, and Has End Date) for an Assignment Folder restricts when students can view the Folder’s instructions and when students can submit to the Assignments folder. However, the Assignments Folder and availability dates still appear in the Assignments listings.

Date Visibility Settings

You can choose one of the following availability dates settings:

  • Visible with access-restricted (before start / after end). The assignment will be visible to learners before the Start Date or after the End Date, but they cannot click or open it. Learners can see the name, dates, and restrictions but cannot see the assignment description or attachments.
  • Visible with submission-restricted (before start / after end). The assignment will be visible to learners before the Start Date or after the End Date, and they can click or open it, but they cannot submit or mark it as complete. Learners can see all details about the assignment, including description, attachments, and rubrics, but they cannot upload files, enter comments, or mark the assignment as complete (for observed in person / on paper submission).
  • Hidden (before start / after end). The assignment is hidden to learners until the start date is reached or after the end date passes. Learners can not see the assignment anywhere, including corresponding Calendar events and Notifications.

Set release conditions for an Assignment folder

Release conditions allow you to associate a Assignments folder with other items in the course. For example, you can require that users meet a criterion, such as reading a set of lecture notes in the Content tool, before they can submit an assignment to the Assignments folder.

  1. Go to Assessments > Assignments, and click Edit folder from the dropdown menu of the folder you want to edit
  2. Click to expand Availability Dates & Conditions on the right hand sidebar
  3. Click to expand Add Release Condition
  4. Choose either Create New, to create a new release condition, or Add New, to choose a release condition you’ve already created
    • Create New:
      • Select a Condition Type (usually an action in a specific tool E.g. Visited content topic)
      • Select Condition Details (the specific target of the release condition, E.g. the specific topic the student must have visited to satisfy the condition
    • Add Existing:
      • Check the box next to the existing condition you’d like to add and click Attach
  5. Click Save

Add special access permissions

If you want to give some students different availability to an Assignment than the rest of the class (E.g. for an accessibility accommodation or an extension), you can use Special Access to change dates and visibility for just that student.

See Add Special Access to an Assignment Folder.
