Makerspace and Sustainability are excited to host a college-wide Circularity Planter Competition – a creative challenge to spark innovation and showcase the benefits of our Makerspace. Makerspaces promote sustainability by reducing waste through repair, reuse, and upcycling, while fostering collaboration and skill-building.
This hands-on competition invites all students and employees to design and craft a unique planter using reclaimed or recycled materials. It’s a chance to learn new skills, meet new people, and contribute to sustainability goals—all while expressing your creativity!

Makerspace and Sustainability are partnering to host a College Wide “Circularity Planter Competition” – a creative challenge designed to spark innovation and bring awareness to our Makerspace. Makerspace promotes sustainability by reducing waste through repair, reuse, and upcycling, while encouraging shared resources instead of individual ownership. Additionally, makerspaces educate communities and foster collaboration through workshops and projects.
This hands-on project invites college students and employees to design and craft a unique planter using reclaimed or recycled materials, reinforcing principles of resource efficiency and waste reduction, while learning new skills and meeting new people.
By participating, you’ll contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), Climate Action (SDG 13), and Life on Land (SDG 15). Beyond sustainability, caring for a plant promotes mental well-being and mindfulness, while choosing diverse plant species fosters biodiversity awareness.

Competition Timeline
Introductory Workshops to support Competition –

Submission Deadline: Friday February 20th at 5 pm.
Submit a picture of your planter and description to Makerspace for judging by 5pm on February 20th. Finalists will be invited to bring their planter in for final judging at Langara Fest.
Design & Build Phase (February):
- Students create their planter using reclaimed materials.
- Select a plant (encourage native or pollinator-friendly species).
- Give your plant a unique name and prepare a short description of its circularity concept.
Judging & Awards:
- Winners announced at Langara Fest.
- Trophy and Prizes for creativity, sustainability, and biodiversity awareness.
