Tip Sheets

A short collection of resources to help faculty address academic and non-academic misconduct.

The Student Code of Conduct give authority to employees to intervene, within the scope of their responsibilities, to correct student behaviour that is disruptive to instruction or other business of the College. Instructors have additional authority to manage the classroom, including virtual environments and off-site College-related educational activities.

To ensure the College is responding appropriately, consistently and fairly to alleged violations of the Student Code of Conduct, all members of the community should report incidents to SCAI as soon as possible after they occur

Several kinds of student behaviour can feel threatening. It’s important to distinguish between the feeling and the exhibited behaviour, and assess the seriousness of the threat based on the behaviour exhibited.

A large part of managing student conduct involves setting the expectations for classroom and other academic behaviour right up front. This Tip Sheets provides a few easy to apply ideas.

Addressing academic dishonesty after the fact can be difficult and time consuming. As with most things, preventing problems before they occur is easier than addressing them later.

Maintaining a courteous and respectful classroom environment requires intervention when a student says or does the wrong thing. This Tip Sheet offers some suggestions on how to step in and correct inappropriate comments made in class.

Although this guide was developed in Australia for primary and secondary school students, I find the strategies and tips outlined are both practical and applicable to the College environment.

Providing students with a written statement of classroom expectations can go a long way toward being clear with students as to classroom behavioural rules.  This sample can be used or modified as needed.
