Reading lists: A new way to share resources with your students

A growing number of instructors are moving away from traditional textbooks and instead using “à la carte” resources (websites, journal articles, book chapters, videos, and more) to support learning outcomes.

The Library and EdTech are implementing a new tool called Reading Lists to help instructors seamlessly integrate these diverse resources (or “readings”) into their Brightspace courses.

Reading lists are more than just digital coursepacks. With reading lists, instructors can:

  • Mark readings as Required or Suggested
  • Annotate readings to guide student learning
  • Provide stable links to library resources
  • Communicate directly with Langara Library to request resources and ensure copyright compliance

Students can also add personal notes to readings and track their progress through a reading list by marking readings as complete. Students enrolled in courses that are currently piloting reading lists tell us that they love these features.

Last but not least, reading lists are compatible with screen readers, screen magnifiers, and speech-recognition software and improve accessibility in Brightspace.

Here is an example of a Langara reading list focused on Universal Design for Learning that incorporates journal articles, e-books, websites, a podcast, and a YouTube video.
