Question:  What do And Tango Makes Three, Star Wars, The Handmaid’s Tale, and The Bible have in common?

Answer:  Each has been censored, challenged, or banned in Canada.

Why have these works (and hundreds more) faced censorship issues?  What is the current state of intellectual freedom in Canada?  Explore these questions and more at the Library this February, as we prepare to celebrate Freedom to Read Week (February 24-March 2).

Freedom to Read Week is an annual event that encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom, which is guaranteed them under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Celebrate and exercise your intellectual freedom with activities in the Library all month long!

  • Discover why The Dictionary and The Diary of Anne Frank were banned with our display of challenged items.
  • Compare how controversial your reading tastes are and make your mark on our interactive poster.
  • Stick it to the censors by checking out an item or two from our Frequently Banned reading list.

And don’t miss our Challenged Book Open Mic:

February 28th, 12:20-1pm

Library’s lobby (under the TV screen)

Seeking all free-thinkers and provocateurs!  Share your favorite challenged book (for ideas, look here) at our open mic event. Join students, instructors, and library staff as we read from controversial books, share our favorite banned material, and explore censorship in Canada.  Participants wanted!
