Authentic engagement with our students can spark transformative conversations and deeper comprehension. Introducing learners to individuals who share their authentic experiences can have a profound, sometimes global impact.
We’ve all welcomed guest speakers into our classrooms, yet often their visits pass without leaving a lasting imprint on our students’ learning journey. However, when Janet Lee encountered Arnie Stewart, she recognized the potential in his narrative to profoundly touch every student who listened. To harness this potential, she knew she had to intertwine his experiences with educational strategies to truly inspire change.
Our session will delve into the compelling saga of Arnie Stewart, dubbed the “Forrest Gump” of literacy, and explore the tangible consequences of his struggle with illiteracy. You’ll be transported to his childhood of extreme poverty in Cobalt, Ontario, where he grew up with eleven siblings, through to his experiences of fatherhood, and his collaborative efforts with teacher and ally, Janet Lee.
We will dissect the components Janet Lee employed from Arnie’s life story to forge a crusade and a platform for genuine transformation in both children’s and adults’ education. The session will challenge you to consider: How can you effectively integrate biographical material into your curriculum?
Setting this session apart is its practical focus – not only will it showcase how Janet Lee utilized Arnie’s story to connect with students, but it will also guide you in crafting your educational content around non-fiction narratives. You’ll leave equipped with a versatile template, empowering you to create your own impactful “Fenix” content.
