Time at school is a lived human experience and an important part of a student’s life. Students from a wide variety of backgrounds experience unique challenges that have massive impacts on their ability to develop their academic skills.
During this interactive session, Jamie Spray and Michael Cheng from the Counselling Department will clarify how life experiences can impact student behavior in the classroom by explaining the etiology and impact of trauma. Participants will unpack real classroom scenarios, learn about new ways of understanding and supporting students, applying teaching techniques from a trauma informed approach. Finally, Musqueam Artist Rita Point Kompst will share why cedar is sacred in the journey of life and how weaving has been her medicine for healing. She will guide participants to weave cedar hearts. Lunch will be served.
