CANCELLED: Helping our Students Learn Better

January 22 @ 12:30 PM - 1:20 PM PST

Becoming a lifelong learner requires us to direct our curiosity to not only the content we’re exploring, but also the way in which we are learning. Some students automatically monitor and adapt their approach to studying so they can achieve their goals. Others simply use the same strategies over and over again regardless of the result. Still others rely on tools (e.g., generative AI) to do the “learning” for them just to stay afloat.

Research shows that providing structured opportunities for students to reflect on their approach learning–what’s working, what isn’t–improves academic outcomes. It also allows us as instructors to see behind the curtain and identify and address misalignment between our and our students understanding of what it is to try and what it is to learn.

In this workshop, we’ll look at some of the research on self-regulated learning in higher education and explore a variety of ways to implement it in our courses to support student learning.

Participants will leave this workshop able to

1. Define self-regulated learning (SRL)

2. Discuss recent research on the impact of SRL for student learning

3. Begin to incorporate SRL interventions into their courses
