According to Jonathan, “In fall 2010, I taught a new Duke undergraduate course on sound in sport. I designed the course in part as an experiment in using mobile technology in ethnographic fieldwork. Students pursued ethnomusicological fieldwork at a variety of local sporting sites. Some students used iPads to take field jottings and to make and annotate field recordings, while others used alternate mobile devices or paper. In addition to using mobile technology to take multisensory fieldnotes, we also used social media–Twitter, WordPress–to collaboratively produce a variety of field texts. Finally, we used iPads to code our field texts and design ethnographic narratives. In this session, I’ll discuss and demonstrate the techniques we tried,
and evaluate both the learning outcomes and the quality of the field texts we produced in this experiment.”
