snəw̓eyəɬ leləm̓ Langara’s Teaching and Curriculum Development Centre (TCDC) and Educational Technology (EdTech) are pleased to share a new professional development program created to support colleagues who are navigating the challenges and opportunities of online teaching. Online Teaching Essentials (OTE) aims to provide instructors with the tools, strategies, and support they need to create enhanced learning experiences for today’s students.
Why This Initiative, Why Now?
Teaching and learning are evolving quickly. New technologies, diverse student needs, and shifting expectations are asking more of us as educators. Online courses are playing a growing role in meeting students where they are, and the quality of these learning experiences has a direct impact on student motivation, success, and retention.
Through flexible and stackable mini courses, OTE offers practical strategies, proven frameworks, and opportunities for peer connection to help instructors design meaningful, accessible, and sustainable online courses and strengthen student engagement, sense of belonging and achievement of learning outcomes.
Opportunities for Professional Growth
Beyond supporting student success, OTE aims to make that work lighter, not heavier by showing instructors how to make online teaching more manageable and rewarding in today’s changing context. Successful participants of OTE will learn to:
- Integrate strategies and adaptable approaches that can save time, foster connection, and make teaching online feel more sustainable.
- Create assessments and learning activities for their online courses that enhance student motivation, build a learning community, and foster student success.
- Apply online course delivery techniques that increase their teaching presence, humanize their online classrooms, promote learner engagement, and align with adult learners’ needs.
- Evaluate their online courses based on self-reflection and peer and student feedback and create an action plan for future improvement.
