BC Place Stadium to Host An Ice Event

The newly renovated BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, BC will be hosting an upcoming ice event in early 2014.

The Vancouver Canucks will be playing the Ottawa Senators in a game called the Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic on Sunday March 2nd, 2014.

Many people may think that this will be the first event of its kind for the Stadium but it has hosted some interesting ice programming in the past.

1987 Men’s World Curling Championship

In 1987 the Men’s World Curling Championship was hosted at the facility at the end of March.

A portable ice plant was brought in, an ice matt was installed over the concrete floor and ice was made to accommodate this championship. Installing ice in a facility of this type proved to be very challenging and some of the media reports about the quality of the “product” were not very favourable. Russ Howard’s rink representing Canada won the event that year.

Winterfest 1989 and 1990

This winter event was held under the “Dome” in 1989 and also 1990.

The facility was turned into a massive winter wonderland with the help of many groups and organizations.

The Recreation Facilities Association of BC took on one of the tougher challenges by helping to install the ice on a big skating pond for the public to use during this event.

Again dealing with ice making in a building that had moving air to help hold up the roof proved to be very difficult. The various members of the RFABC worked hard however at their craft and a successful event took place during both years.

As an interesting side note the ice plant that was used for these various events at the Stadium was moved “up” to Grouse Mountain to help support their mountain top outdoor skating pond.
