TCDC Summer Book Club: Inclusive Teaching

June 9, 2023 @ 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM PDT

There are so many reasons why people might think and feel that they don’t belong in a particular class or program. Maybe it’s mindset. “I’m not a math person.” “Science just isn’t my thing.” “I’ve never been good at writing.” Maybe it’s race or gender. “None of the instructors, and very few of the students, in this discipline look like me.” Maybe it’s socioeconomic background. “I’m the first one in my family that can afford to go to college.” Or maybe it’s language. “I can’t take in all this new vocabulary.” Whatever the reason, these thoughts and feelings interfere with and impede learning, and often result in academic results that do not accurately reflect ability. Fortunately, research shows that there are several things (some quite simple) we can do to make our courses feel more inclusive for all of our learners.

Interested in learning more? Join us for TCDC’s summer online book club!

In May and June, we’ll be reading Inclusive Teaching: Strategies for Promoting Equity in the College Classroom by Kelly A. Hogan and Viji Sathy. This book is an easy, enjoyable read that offers a variety of strategies for building inclusive learning environments. The authors share practical, easy to implement ideas to boost students’ sense of belonging using everything from your course syllabus to your lesson plans, from your office hours to your class discussions.

We look forward to reading and discussing this book with you!

Digital copies of Inclusive Teaching: Strategies for Promoting Equity in the College Classroom are available at the Langara Library. TCDC will also have a few print copies available. If you would like to borrow a print copy or if you have any questions, please contact us at tcdc@langara.ca.
