Copyright Workshops Spring 2018

Posted on January 9, 2018 by

Copyright is a term we’re all familiar with, but what does copyright really mean and how does it impact our day-to-day lives? As staff at Langara, you may come into contact with copyright issues more often than you realize. Luckily, the Copyright Office is here to help with all your copyright questions and concerns. We are offering two workshops at the beginning of the Spring 2018 semester along with a new online tutorial to help guide you through the world of copyright.

COPYRIGHT FOR EDUCATORS

Have you ever copied an article for your students? Posted a YouTube video to D2L? Added an image from Google to your lecture slides? If so, you’ve shared copyright-protected content. Fortunately for us at Langara, the Canadian Copyright Act outlines special allowances for education. This interactive session provides a plain-language overview of how copyright law applies to activities in the physical and online classroom.  Participants will leave with improved understanding of how to balance their rights as educators with those of content creators. Please feel free to bring your lunch to this session.

Presenter: Darcye Lovsin, Copyright Librarian
Date: Thursday January 18, 12:30-1:20, L216

COPYRIGHT FOR CREATORS

Whether you’re an artist, musician, author, or applied researcher, your works are protected by copyright. This interactive workshop, presented by Langara’s Copyright Librarian, will provide creators with an overview of their rights under Canadian copyright law, as well as practical techniques for protecting their works in the physical and digital marketplace. Please feel free to bring your lunch to this session.

Presenter: Darcye Lovsin, Copyright Librarian
Date: Wednesday January 24, 12:30-1:20, T224

COPYRIGHT FOR INSTRUCTORS

Unable to make our in person copyright tutorials? You’re in luck! The Copyright Office has just launched its first online tutorial, Copyright for Instructors, which outlines some of the copyright essentials instructors must be aware of when creating courses at Langara. You can self register for the course through Brightspace by clicking on the ‘Self-Registration’ button located on your dashboard’s home page.

Questions? Contact Darcye Lovsin, Langara’s Copyright Librarian at dlovsin@langara.ca and sign up for our in person workshops through the TCDC.
