Library Instruction for Fall 2016!

While you start planning your curriculum and write your course outlines, don’t forget to include library instruction for the Fall 2016 Term! Whether your students need to learn basic library skills or advanced subject-specific research strategies, the Library can help. In-person workshops and online assignment guides can be developed to address the specific research needs of your assignments.  For general skills, we also offer three online tutorials that are delivered through D2L.

Online D2L Tutorials:

Our online D2L tutorials can help on-campus and distance students gain library research skills. All three tutorials contain library-marked quizzes. Seehttp://www.langara.bc.ca/library/services/faculty/d2l.html for more information.

Introduction to Research – This tutorial introduces students to library research methods and is geared toward first-year students in all disciplines.

Avoiding Plagiarism – Langara instructors discuss plagiarism in a series of short videos. Topics include intentional and unintentional plagiarism, why students need to be aware of the issues and consequences, and ways to protect their academic integrity.

Can I Use This? Evaluating Your Sources – This new online tutorial provides students with a 5Ws (Who, What, Where, When, Why) Framework to apply to resources that they find both through the library and online. Short videos walk students through the evaluation process using several example resources.

In-Person Workshops:

Whether you’re planning a research assignment or just want your students to be comfortable using the library, your subject librarian can work with you to develop a customized session to meet the specific needs of your students. By providing copies of your assignments or discussing your student’s specific needs, we can ensure that these sessions are helpful and relevant.  Classes can be held in the Library teaching lab for hands-on learning, or in your regular classroom.

Online Assignment Guides:

Your subject librarian can create a customized guide with recommendations of resources and search strategies specific to your assignments. See examples of research guides here:http://langara.ca/library/research-help/assignment-help/index.html.

To request library instruction for your Fall 2016 classes, or if you have questions about how the library can help, please get in touch with your subject librarian.
