Copyright: Fair Dealing is Sweet! February 24, 12:30 – 1:30pm

February 23-27 marks Fair Dealing Week in Canada. Whether fair dealing is a familiar concept or new to you, it’s certainly something to be celebrated… and we will on February 24th.

The fair dealing provision in the Copyright Act allows Canadians to make use of copyright-protected works without payment or permission for the following purposes:

  • Research
  • Criticism
  • Private Study
  • Review
  • News reporting
  • Parody
  • Satire
  • Education

The last three uses were added to fair dealing in November 2012, when the long-awaited Copyright Modernization Act was finally enacted. As you might guess, the addition of ‘education’ was particularly significant to colleges and universities.

Fair dealing provides instructors with flexibility to hone teaching materials to best support student learning, while still respecting creators’ rights.

Stop by the library lobby on Tuesday, February 24th at 12:30pm for ‘Fair Dealing is Sweet’, a celebration of this important user right. Our copyright experts will be on hand, answering questions and serving up cupcakes (while supplies last). Try your hand at copyright trivia and enter to win a Starbucks gift card!
