The Langara Library is focused on connecting with community and participating in professional organizations and service to our communities. As a new feature on Library Central, the Library will be highlighting professional development activities that our librarians and staff organize, attend, or are interested in.
On October 27, Lindsay Tripp, Langara’s Copyright Librarian, attended a workshop hosted by BCcampus, entitled “Librarians and Open Education Resources (OER)” A full summary of the event can be found on the BCcampus website: “Four Ways Librarians are Essential to the Future of Open Textbooks and OER.”
Here is a brief summary of the event from Lindsay:
Where was the conference/workshop/event?
LT: Douglas College’s Aboriginal Gathering Place
What was the conference/workshop/event? What was the theme?
LT: The workshop, titled ‘Librarians and OER,’ emerged in response to conversation between BCcampus and interested librarians (now the OER Librarians Group). The session aimed to give librarians ideas, tools, and motivation to continue raising awareness about OER on campuses across the province.
Who was in attendance?
LT: Most of the attendees were academic librarians, library administrators, and educational technologists from the lower mainland and Washington State.
What was the most interesting presentation/topic/idea/session/trend?
LT: For me, the most exciting take-away was the endless potential for collaboration. From cataloguing to copyright expertise, librarians possess skills that position them as important partners in the creation, curation, and promotion of OER.
