A City Classroom

How to make the city a classroom and free the students

Duane Elverum and Janet Moore,  The Globe and Mail, Wednesday, Feb. 26 2014, 7:00 AM EST

Elverum and Moore discuss CityStudio, their new school that works with City Hall to “simultaneously create deeply engaged learning experiences and help the city achieve its goal” of a green city.

They invited students from Langara College along with those from British Columbia Institute of Technology, Emily Carr University, Simon Fraser University, University of British Columbia and Vancouver Community College to receive credits working inside City Hall and with communities on Vancouver’s sustainability problems.

Students can “take on real world challenges and create positive change in our cities. The real learning is in the how – they co-create with multiple stakeholders, facilitate dialogues, manage projects, raise funds, and implement pilots to demonstrate longer-term viability.”

More details in Globe and Mail article and  video of students brainstorm ideas at Vancouver’s CityStudio.
