Back to school resources and reminders

Another school year is upon us! Three back-to-school reminders from the library:

Find your Subject Librarian

Each program and department at Langara has been assigned a subject librarian. Your department’s subject librarian is your “gateway” to the library, an ally who provides subject-specific help with library research, instruction, assignments, collection development, policies, or other library-related issues.

D2L Tutorials:

The library offers three D2L tutorials to help students effectively use library and online research materials.

1.  Library: Introduction to Research

Our most popular tutorial introduces academic library research to (primarily) first-year students in all disciplines.

2.  Evaluating Web Resources

Introduces students to the criteria used to evaluate websites that they find when they search Google (as we know they will!).

3.  Avoiding Plagiarism (new!)

Created in collaboration with academic departments across Langara, this new tutorial discusses intentional and unintentional plagiarism, explains why students need to be aware of the issues surrounding academic integrity, and provides clear solutions for avoiding plagiarism.  The tutorial features video interviews with instructors from a variety of academic departments at Langara, who discuss issues of plagiarism that they see with their students.

All three D2L tutorials contain library-marked quizzes.  Contact your subject librarian to set up an online tutorial for your students.

Dealing with Plagiarism

In an ideal world, this guide would be obsolete. Until then, the Library provides information to help Langara instructors deal with the problem of plagiarism.
