Horizon Report 2012

The NMC Horizon Report > 2012 Higher Education Edition is a collaborative effort between the New Media Consortium (NMC) and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI), an EDUCUASE Program.

Entering mainstream use:

  • One year or less: mobile apps and tablet computing
  • Two to three year: Game-based learning and learning analytics are seen in the second horizon of two to three years;
  • Four to five years: gesture-based computing and the Internet of Things are seen emerging in the third horizon of four to five years.

The report also discusses key trends (i.e. hoThe world of work is increasingly collaborative, driving changes in the way student projects are structured) and significant changes (i.e. Economic pressures and new models of education are bringing unprecedented competition to the traditional models of higher education) highlighting the academic perspective that influence the trends in technology for which to watch.
