Description

Zoom is a web, video, and audio conferencing service that can be used for online classes and meetings. Instructors can use it for online teaching, training, remote support, audio calls, and meetings. Zoom allows for video, audio, and screen sharing between participants. It can be used from any computer, laptop, tablet, or phone, and is compatible on PC, Mac, Android and iOS devices. Collaborative whiteboard and annotation, and remote control of screen. Live polls can be prepared and used during the meeting, with live chat used to ask questions or provide visual feedback. Zoom can scale to accommodate up to 300 users, and has the ability to subdivide the larger group into smaller subgroups using Breakout Rooms.

The Zoom learner interface and functionality that may be confusing to some; there is limited opportunity for personalization.

In-person, email-based, and virtual technical support is offered by Langara EdTech. Robust online help documentation is also available.

Zoom allows users to communicate through different channels (audio, visual, textual) but is limited in its ability to provide non-sequential, flexible/adaptive engagement with material. At this time, live captioning is not available. Closed captions can be added and edited using Kaltura MediaSpace.

Instructors cannot control student anonymity, but Zoom provides some solution for holding students accountable for their actions. While students have the ability to change their names, it is possible to limit attendance to Langara users only.

Zoom is widely known and popular, it is likely that most students are familiar with the tool and have basic technical competence with it.

Zoom has relatively easy-to-use features that would significantly improve an instructor’s ability to be present with students via active management, monitoring, and engagement. These include reactions, polls, and the ability for participants to raise their hands.
