Designing Your Mixed-Mode Course
Learn ways to design a course for delivery dividing time between online and classroom activities. We will look at how best to take advantage of both online and face-to-face environments. You will learn instructional design principles in mixed-mode courses and have the opportunity to workshop one of your own courses putting these principles to work.
Designing Effective Online Course Activities
Whether your course is classroom based, mixed mode, or completely online, effective online activities can enhance learning and expand the classroom space. However, they must be designed to add value to the course and its outcomes. This workshop is ideal for instructors brand new to online learning or those who just need some fresh ideas. Come to the workshop prepared with one or two major activities you currently have (or would have) in a classroom environment.
Offering Choice in Assessment
Summative assessments are designed to measure knowledge, skills, and abilities and assign a grade. Providing different options for students to demonstrate what they have learned not only reduces barriers for students with physical, cognitive or linguistic limitations but also increases all students’ engagement with assignments and the quality of the work you receive.
In this workshop, we will explore why and how to design effective assessments that offer students various ways to demonstrate their learning. In addition, we will showcase tools your students can use to complete their assignments including blogging, comic and video creation tools.
Digital Media Creator Series
DMC Module 1: Digital Media Creator Series
In this introduction to Digital Media Creator we will cover using universal design for learning with digital media, the implications of copyright for teaching with digital media, and different options for sharing your creative output. You will experiment with using a free tool for creating a short video on the theme of colour.
DMC Module 2: Visual Storytelling
Narrative is a crucial element in using digital media effectively to engage your students. In this module, we explore a number of devices for telling stories in your teaching, including sketchnoting, and comics.
DMC Module 3: Effective Slide Design
Module 3 of the DMC covers effective techniques for creating engaging presentation slides using a variety of digital media, including images, text, colour, video and animations. Participants will also be introduced to the cognitive processes and theories underlying learning with digital media.
DMC Module 4: Podcasting and Audio
Podcasting has exploded in popularity in recent years and has many benefits for teaching and learning. This session will cover the hardware and software needed to get started, recording tips, and how to edit and share your podcast with your students.
DMC Module 5: Mobile Video Production
Module 5 introduces participants to basic video production and editing, utilizing mobile devices and Adobe’s Premiere Rush editing programme. Working in small groups, participants will shoot & edit a short (max 1 minute) video based on a concept central to their role within the College.
Creating and Sharing Video with Kaltura MediaSpace
Kaltura MediaSpace is Langara’s streaming media platform that allows faculty and students to upload video and audio and share it with anyone. Learn how easy it is to create, upload and share content through Brightspace or elsewhere, and find out about some of the built-in tools you can use to edit your video, create closed captions and record your screen.
Recording your screen (Screen casting): The Whys and Hows
Recording your computer or tablet screen has multiple uses in teaching, from giving assignment feedback to recording mini-lectures. Come and find out how easy it is to record your screen and share the output with your students.
Using Video in your Brightspace Course(s)
Come and learn about some of the quick and easy ways to add video to your Brightspace course(s) in order to engage and motivate your students. From YouTube and TED Talks to adding your own narrated slides and interactive quizzes, we will explore some of the principles and guidelines behind using video effectively in your teaching. There will also be opportunities for some hands-on incorporation of video into your Brightspace course(s).

Are you curious about Brightspace – what it is and how you can use it in your teaching? In this hands-on workshop, you will explore basic tools including content, news, discussions, quizzes and assignments. This workshop will build your foundation for further Brightspace workshops and exploration.
Brightspace Fundamentals: Adding Content
Learn how to organize and add content to your Brightspace courses. Topics include creating modules, uploading files, and adding links to activities such as discussion topics and assignments. You’ll also learn how to release content selectively based on conditions such as dates, completion of activities or group membership.

Brightspace Fundamentals: Assignments & Discussions
Discussions and Assignments are two great tools for setting up activities and evaluating students in your courses. Learn how these tools work, what types of activities each is best for and how to use the tools to provide your students with feedback and grades.

Brightspace Tools: Groups, Assignments, and Discussions
Come learn how to use Brightspace’s Groups tool effectively for assignments and discussions involving group work. You can create groups of any number or size automatically or manually, or you can let students enroll in the group of their choice. Whether teaching face to face or online, you can provide students with work and communication spaces for their projects.
Brightspace Tools: Grades
Learn how easy it is to set up your grade book using Brightspace’s powerful and flexible grades tool. Find out how to create and edit grade book items, enter grades, share them with your students, and set up final grade calculations. You do not need to know or learn any complicated formulas. Brightspace does it all for you. Please bring along a sample of a current course grading scheme.
Brightspace Tools: Quizzes, Surveys & Self Evaluations
Learn about the three types of assessments available in Brightspace – Quizzes, Surveys, and Self Evaluations – and when to use each. You will learn how to set up your Brightspace Quizzes, edit and create quiz questions, and mark and release grades for quizzes.
Brightspace Tools: Rubrics
Rubrics are a great way to assess student work across a level field. You design the criteria and students understand what is expected of them and what they need to do to earn full marks. Bring along your own rubrics in Word or Text files and you will learn how to set up the same or similar rubric in Brightspace.

The labs are scheduled for ninety minutes, but feel free to drop in for 10 minutes or stay longer. You can come when it suits you, but please register so we know how many to expect.

This session will highlight the benefits of using Brightspace for instructors and students. You will learn about basic tools such as content, grades, discussions, and assignments. You will leave knowing how to create and use these features with your students, but you can start small and add more tools and features later if you wish. We will also make sure you are aware of the resources available to you for future enhancement of your course.

iWeb & CourseWeb (WordPress)
iWeb & CourseWeb are tools that let you easily create and organize web pages and postings. iWeb & CourseWeb use WordPress, a well-known blog & content management tool. Its many features include blogging that can allow replies or comments, “feeds” so anyone can easily be informed of updates or new postings, and tags (keywords) so readers can search for pages specific to their interests. It’s also mobile friendly so users can access and post to your site. In this hands-on workshop, you will create your site, determine optimal settings, and add content. We will review privacy issues and explore how your students can use Courseweb.

OER-Finding and Incorporating OER Materials
OER (Open Educational Resources) are “digitized materials offered freely and openly for educators, students and self-learners to use and re-use for teaching, learning and research” (OECD, 2007). In this workshop, we will look at some good examples of OER and where to find them, as well as consider the licenses that they are released under. We will also discuss the benefits of using OER for instructors, students and Langara as an institution. The workshop will include hands on searching for and reusing OER.

Numerous peer-reviewed studies now show that using Open Educational Resources (OER) such as open textbooks can lead to lower failure and dropout rates, high levels of student satisfaction and has clear financial benefits for students. Many students cite textbook affordability as one of the biggest hurdles to academic success.

Polling: A Review of Free Tools (Socrative, Poll Everywhere & Others)
We will investigate several free tools you can use in your classes for formative assessment and student engagement. Tools we will look at and possibly test include Poll Everywhere, Socrative, Doodle, Poll Junkie, Poll Daddy, etc. Feel free to share othe tools you have tried.
Turnitin is a text-matching tool for encouraging academic integrity, but it can also be used to help students understand academic integrity in written assignments In this session, you will learn how Turnitin works, how to interpret the ‘originality reports’ on student submissions and how these reports can be used to help students understand how to use quotation marks, cite sources properly, and paraphrase
