Quizzes in Brightspace can be graded automatically or manually, although it depends on the question types you have used.  Manual grading is accessed through the context menu options for an individual quiz in the Manage Quizzes list.

Quizzes Event Log

The Quizzes Event Log shows you every recordable student action takenduring the duration of the quiz. To access it, open an attempt and click the “Quizzes Event Log” link.

Auto-graded vs. Manually Graded Questions

Auto-grading

With the exception of Written Response (Long Answer) questions, Brightspace can automatically grade quiz answers by matching the answers recorded by the instructor. In many cases, Brightspace can automatically grade quizzes and enter the results into the student Grades. There are, however, situations where intervention and manual grading is needed. For example, quizzes contain Written Response (Long Answer) questions that must be graded manually the instructor must allow for acceptable spellings for Short Answer questions, e.g. accepting “color” when “colour” was the only answer assigned to the question.

Auto-grading is possible with the following question types:

  • True or False (T/F)
  • Multiple Choice (MC)
  • Multi-Select (M-S)
  • Short Answer* (SA)
  • Multi-Short Answer* (MSA)
  • Fill in the Blank* (FIB)
  • Matching
  • Ordering (ORD)
  • Arithmetic (2+2)
  • Significant Figures (X10)

Auto-grading is more challenging for SA, MSA or FIB questions.

  • Do not use these question types for any answer longer than one or two words.
  • Anytime that students are typing an answer, the instructor must anticipate ANY possible acceptable answer when setting up the quiz question. Learners need to have correct spelling for those answers to be auto-graded as correct.
  • It is highly recommended that you do a manual check and adjust the auto-grading as needed before publishing the grades as something as small as an extra space between two words will be auto-graded as incorrect.

Manual Grading

Manual grading is required for Written Response (WR) questions, which are used for open ended, one-phrase to essay length answers. An optional answer key field can be enabled for WR questions via the Options drop-down so that instructors can easily compare students’ answers with the target answer on the same screen when grading.

Grading Quizzes

Quizzes can be manually graded by student attempt (grade an individual student’s entire quiz and then move on to the next student) or by question (go through question 1 for all students, then question 2 for all students, etc.)

  • Find the Quiz you want to grade, then click the arrow  next to the quiz name. Note: clicking on the name of the quiz will bring up the edit quiz options, not grading.
  • In the drop-down menu, select Grade.

Grading by Attempt (By Student)

  • Under the Users tab, you will see a list of quiz submissions/attempts. You can also access attempts under the Attempts tab.
    • Click the attempt for the student you want to grade. If the student has more than one attempt, they will be all be listed. Make sure you click the one you want to grade.A new page will open where you can grade the attempt and enter feedback.

Note: you can filter the list by clicking Show Search Options.

Grading by Question

Select the “Questions” tab (*see options for grading by question below) and click on a question to being grading. You have the option to “Hide learners’ names” while grading.

Entering Scores

  1. For auto-graded questions, a red X indicates the student did not answer the question correctly. The blue arrow indicates the correct answer.
  2. Entering (Overriding) Scores: Auto-graded scores can be overridden if the student’s answer is considered acceptable. In the below example, the instructor has manually overridden the “0” that auto-grading assigned the response of “falcons” when the answer key only specified “falcon”.

Note: Any question that is not auto-graded requires a score to be entered. By default, a 0 is awarded to the student until a score is manually entered.

Adding Feedback

  • Click Expand Question Feedback below the score field to enter custom feedback for any answer. A feedback box will appear where you can enter feedback for individual students on specific questions.

Note:

Students will not be able to see this feedback with their quiz results unless you change the default display settings. To do this, go to the Evaluation & Feedback tab in the quiz settings and set it to show questions (unless you only added feedback to incorrect questions, you will need to select one of the All questions settings).
If you don’t want the students to see the quiz questions indefinitely, you will need to go back to the quiz settings and change the published display back to No questions once students have had a chance to see their feedback.

Overriding the Overall Score

When you have finished grading all the questions, click Save Draft and the Final Score will automatically update. You have the option to override the final calculation by entering a score in this field.
