How are Brightspace courses created?

One empty course is automatically created in Brightspace for each course section scheduled in Banner. This is done 2 months in advance of when the course will be taught. For example, courses scheduled to be taught in January will have empty course offerings created in Brightspace the previous November. Instructors must then “fill” the empty course, either by creating new content or copying content from previous courses into the shell. See Preparing Your Brightspace Courses for Students for details.

What if I don’t want to use Brightspace for my course?

If you don’t want to use Brightspace, there’s nothing you need to do. Unless you activate your Brightspace offering, your students won’t see it.

Do I need to request a course?

If you are teaching a course in the upcoming semester, please look in your Brightspace account under My Courses tab to see if the course has already been created for you.

Regular Studies courses are automatically created approximately 1 month before the course start date.

If you are teaching a Continuing Studies course and you don’t see a Brightspace section for your course, contact your program coordinator to find out if a course has been requested for you.
