Assigning Weights to Individual Grade Items

In the weighted system, individual items can also contribute a certain weight to the final grade.

For example, if you have one Major Project which contributes 35% to the final grade, it is an individual grade item with a weight of 35%.

To assign a weight to an individual grade item

  1. Navigate to the Manage Grades window.
  2. Click the link for the grade items that will be assigned an individual weight– for example, Major Project.
  3. Below Max. Points enter the Weight that you’ve assigned for this grade item.  For example, if this grade item is worth 35% of the course grade, enter 35. Note The Weight option does not appear unless your Grading System is set to Weighted.

4. Click Save and Close and return to Manage Grades.

5. Review the grade item that you weighted. The item should show both the Max. Points and the Weight you just set.

Note: Until you complete all your grade weights, D2L will display a warning at the top of your list indicating that the weights do not add up to 100%. Although it is not required that you create a grade book which adds up to 100%, it is recommended that you do so.
